It is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, a virus from the herpes family. This is also called herpes zoster. It is to be noted that this is the same virus that causes chickenpox. Shingles usually affects the elder people than the younger people. It may also affect the immuno-deficient individuals. A person with shingles may pass the virus to any individual who had not been affected by this virus. Passing this virus will not cause shingles on that individual, but will they will get chicken pox if they were not affected by chickenpox earlier. If they had been affected by chicken pox earlier they will get shingles.
After a person recovers from chicken pox, it is believed that the virus that caused chicken pox still resides in the body and moves towards the nervous system and be there in an inactive state. They reappear by moving from the nerve cells to the skin when they reactivate. This virus is a serious threat to individual who are undergoing treatment which reduces their immune system or individuals who are affected by HIV.
They heal naturally in 3 to 5 weeks, since in most cases the body has the antibodies to fight the virus. The severity of shingles can be brought down with the person being treated with drugs like acyclovir, valacyclovir or famcyclovir.
